Some wallpaper is too fragile to wash. Check on the back of your remnants. Usually manufacturers stamp papers as being washable or unwashable. If there’s nothing that says it’s washable, don’t take a risk; use one the following methods. (Or you can test wash a remnant to see whether it will with stand harsher cleaning methods.)

To clean fragile wallpaper, rub the marked area gently with one of those soft gum erasers — yes, the kind that crumbles easily. You can find one in an office or art supply store.

Sanding the area with a slice of rye toast also works; just don’t use butter and jelly! To get rid of greasy marks from the wallpaper, get some cornstarch and cleaning fluid.

Here’s what to do to clean the messy, greasy stains from the wallpaper:

  • Make a paste from cleaning fluid and cornstarch.
  • Apply it to the stain. Rub it in gently (remember you have to use this cleaning method because the wallpaper is fragile).
  • After it dries, use a brush to take it off.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary.

If you have fingerprints all the way up your stairs or in hallways, I can almost guarantee there are kids in the house. To clean those spots, you need a damp cloth and cornstarch.

Here’s what to do to remove messy fingerprint stains from the wallpaper:

  • Use a damp cloth on the prints to remove them. Don’t get that rag too wet.
  • Put a light coat of cornstarch on top of the area you just cleaned. It will take away excess moisture so it doesn’t damage the wall paper.
