With the cost of energy mounting, renters and homeowners alike want to keep the lid on increases in gas, oil, and electric bills. You can help do that by weather stripping doors and windows so the furnace doesn’t have work overtime to heat up the cold air coming through the cracks inside window frames and doorframes.

Weather stripping also prevents loss when you’re using your air conditioner. It reduces the dust coming into your home, as well as the number of insects and spiders. And you won’t hear aggravating outside noise — heavy traffic, yipping dogs, and the deafening music of the teens next door. Fortunately, weather stripping is an easy job you can do yourself. And weatherstripping is generally easy to install or take off if you want to use it only seasonally.

Your first step is deciding what kind of weatherstripping to use — how durable you want it to be and how much you want to spend. (Keep in mind there are always new products on the market and different brands.)
Weatherstripping is available in tape-backed foam that goes around windows and doors, and also sweeps or shoes that go under doors. The cost is nominal, compared to the cost of heat or air conditioning.

Don’t forget to put a weatherstrip on the bottom of exterior doors and windows. There’s always a gap between the door and threshold and even locked windows have air coming in or going out if there’s no weatherstripping.

When you’re sealing doors and windows, the weatherstripping is placed on the outside of the frame. Follow package directions carefully.
